Field Studies & Community Partnerships

Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Spokane International Academy, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the walls of the classroom. Our students regularly participate in field studies and community partnerships that bring classroom concepts to life through authentic, hands-on experiences.
Throughout the year, students learn from local professionals, community leaders, artists, scientists, historians, and business owners whose expertise enriches classroom learning and helps students see how their studies connect to the real world.
Field studies are intentionally connected to grade-level curriculum and provide students with opportunities to explore careers, ask questions, solve problems, and deepen their understanding through firsthand experiences.
Examples of Previous Field Studies
Our students have participated in experiences such as:
-
Green Bluff – Agriculture, sustainability, and local food systems
-
Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) – Regional history, culture, and art
-
Cat Tales Wildlife Center – Animal science, conservation, and ecosystems
-
Spokane Fish Hatchery – Environmental science, fisheries, and watershed management
-
Spokane County Courthouse – Government, civics, and the judicial system
-
World Relief - Refugee Simulation
Additional field studies are designed around the curriculum each year and may include visits to colleges, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, museums, scientific facilities, government agencies, and cultural institutions.
Learning From Community Experts
Our commitment to authentic learning extends beyond field studies. Throughout the year, students engage with guest speakers and community partners who bring real-world knowledge and experiences into the classroom.
These partnerships help students:
-
Connect classroom learning to real-world applications
-
Explore a variety of career pathways
-
Learn directly from professionals and subject matter experts
-
Develop meaningful relationships with members of the Spokane community
-
Better understand how they can make a positive impact in their own communities and beyond
Whether students are studying environmental science, government, global issues, engineering, healthcare, business, or the arts, we strive to connect them with people who are making a difference in those fields every day.
Share Your Expertise
Do you have professional experience or specialized knowledge that could inspire our students?
We are always looking for community members, businesses, organizations, and professionals who are willing to partner with Spokane International Academy. Whether by hosting a field study, speaking in a classroom, mentoring students, or sharing your expertise, your involvement helps make learning more meaningful and relevant.
If you are interested in partnering with SIA, we encourage you to contact your child's teacher or the school office. Together, we can continue creating authentic learning experiences that prepare students for college, careers, and lifelong leadership.
